Before you start

Before you start, determine, of course, what kind of car you want. Using the make, model and year, use the Kelley blue book to determine what the market value of the car is, depending on its condition. This will give you a base figure to work with when it comes to deciding what you should pay for a car.

Next, decide what you are going to use the car for. If you're going to use the car every day just for transportation, you probably don't need one in mint condition, and you'll be able to pay less. In addition, if part of the reason you're buying the car is so that you can work on it and bring it back to its original condition and restore it, that's another reason you won't need a perfect car. If you simply collect cars or you just want one that's in mint condition and you don't have any intention of trying to fix it up yourself, then you'll pay significantly more for a "good" to "mint condition" car.

Know what the problem areas are going to be

Just about every make, model and year of car has specific problems particular to it. In other words, there's just about no car model out there that gets away scot-free. So research the car model you want and make sure you know what problems you should be expecting. This will help you determine not just how expensive a car is going to be to buy, but how expensive it will be to keep. Again, this isn't necessarily going to be something you're particularly worried about if you want the car for itself as a showpiece and not for daily use, but it's still something you should know. It also may affect how much you pay for the car.

Classic car trader clubs

There are lots of clubs available based upon specific classic cars for people who have owned the type of vehicle you want. Joining one of these clubs (many of which exist online now) will help you know what you can buy and what you should stay away from.

Once you find the car you think you want

Remember that just as with any type of car purchase, previous owners can "pretty up" cars so that they look much better than they really are. Have a car appraiser look at the car before you buy. They'll probably be able to tell you whether or not the car's been in an accident, whether the engine is in good shape, whether the transmission is shot, and so on. If any of these things are true, this will lessen the value of the vehicle and therefore the price you pay. And of course, you may not want the vehicle at all once you find these things out.

Pull a used vehicle history report

You should be able to pull a used vehicle history report using the car's vehicle identification number to determine whether or not anything is wrong with it other than what you have been told. It will also tell you whether or not the car has been stolen (which happens sometimes) and how many people have owned it previously.

Knowing your way around the classic car trader environment will help you get the perfect classic car you want, based upon what you want to use it for. You shouldn't have to pay more for the car you want than it's worth; armed with a few simple facts, you won't have to.

We all know that sales and values of large vehicles are slumping - just ask Nissan about their Titan pickup. But if you're driving an SUV today and really hate watching the pump rack up all those dollars each time you get gas, Kelley Blue Book researchers have some advice for you: don't sell. Sound like a bad tip? Here's the reasoning, digested from a KBB press release (available after the jump):

Even though SUV and truck values have dropped about eight percent since September (an eight percent drop usually takes between 12 and 18 months), KBB thinks that these large vehicles are "nearing their minimum price points." When winter comes, KBB expects an "uptick in buyer interest in SUVs." Therefore, keep biting the bullet at the pump and, "Don't let emotions make your decision."

Of course, the value of this advice varies depending on what large ride you've got, whether or not you really need a vehicle of that size and how much you drive. Does it make sense for you?

Don't Sell Your SUV; Kelley Blue Book Data Reveals Costs May Outweigh Gains

IRVINE, Calif., May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Increasing gas prices have encouraged consumers to trade-in their SUVs for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, but it is important to examine the big picture before making a final decision. Hanging onto your current vehicle and riding out the current gas prices could be the most economical answer."

Don't let emotions make your decision -- you might be troubled by your current gasoline costs, but costs associated with acquiring, operating and insuring a new vehicle will most likely outweigh them. Below are a few suggestions in determining whether to sell your SUV

* Is your SUV paid off? If not, be aware that you might be "upside down" on your current auto loan, owing more than it's worth
* Do the math -- look at the monthly payments for your alternative vehicle, check your credit and research all financing options

La revolución llegará en doble DIN

¿Android en tu automóvil? Eso esperamos. Si todo sale bien, antes de terminar el 2009.

Mientras Rio presentaba uno de los primeros reproductores MP3 en 1998, las radios con CD sólo eran estándar en autos de lujo. Cuando Apple popularizó los reproductores MP3 con el iPod en 2001, el reproductor de CD estaba recién comenzando a bajar al segmento medio de autos. Hoy cuando los CDs ya casi no se venden, todavía puedes encontrar al reproductor de CD como estándar en todos los autos. Si bien es cierto que en lugares como Japón, Estados Unidos e Inglaterra es cada vez más común ver sistemas de navegación con reproductores de audio digitales en los autos, sigue siendo exclusivo para la gama alta.

Aunque pareciera que la industria automotriz no ha avanzado mucho desde que Motorola presentara la primera radio para autos en 1930, durante esta lenta evolución hicieron una cosa bien: Eligieron un estándar y lo respetaron. Hoy en día prácticamente todas las radios de auto usan una dimensión estándar. Este tamaño, puede ser de altura simple o doble altura, y debido a esta diferencia es conocida como DIN o Doble DIN.

En 1984 se adoptó el estándar DIN (oficialmente conocido como ISO 7736) en los automóviles, lo que permitió que los mismos propietarios pudieran reemplazar fácilmente la radio de su auto por un modelo más avanzado si lo estimaban conveniente. Pero últimamente es cada vez más común ver autos con el estándar Doble DIN, lo que junto con el abaratamiento de los componentes electrónicos, hace que estemos en vísperas de grandes cambios para la industria automotriz.

Buenos pal Hardware, Malos pal Software: El caso de los celulares

Los fabricantes de productos electrónicos para consumidores nunca han sido muy hábiles con el software. Marcas como Pioneer, Sony, Alpine, Kenwood o JVC hacen excelentes productos en hardware. Pero su software y en especial sus interfaces, siempre han estado bastante más atrasados que la evolución que ha tenido el mundo informático. Por eso a veces sólo falta que algunos importantes representantes del mundo del software se pasen al mundo de la electrónica del consumidor para revolucionar el campo juego. Ya lo vimos con los celulares.

Durante años los teléfonos celulares eran sólo eso, teléfonos. Cuando Palm, un fabricante de PDAs decidió hacer teléfonos, vimos la utilidad de tener e-mail en el teléfono. Posteriormente vimos como muchos fabricantes de celulares empezaron a licenciar Windows Mobile y ofrecer teléfonos inteligentes. Por primera vez empezamos a encontrar la misma funcionalidad de un computador, en el formato de un teléfono — aunque la experiencia de usuario aún no fuera la más sencilla. Hasta que llegó Apple y Google al juego con el iPhone y Android, logrando que finalmente se popularizara el acceso a internet y sofisticados servicios web en los teléfonos a escala masiva.

Ahora es el turno de los autos. Si tan sólo Google o Apple hicieran lo mismo que hicieron con los celulares, y pusieran esa misma funcionalidad en un formato Doble DIN, la “radio” de los autos cambiará para siempre.

Android en tu Auto

Yo apuesto mis fichas por Google. Para empezar, el sistema operativo Android tiene la factibilidad necesaria, tanto de licencia como técnica, para que diversos fabricantes puedan utilizarlo en sus equipos. Sin mencionar, obviamente, que cuenta con prácticamente toda la funcionalidad necesaria para tener el sistema de navegación, comunicación y entretenimiento del sueño de cualquier automovilista.

Imaginate una “radio” de auto (habrá que encontrarle un mejor nombre, ¿computador de auto?), que pueda ser el mejor teléfono de manos libres, que permita utilizar un sistema de navegación GPS con Google Maps incluyendo mapas de todo el mundo con su conexión a internet y que pueda almacenar y reproducir una amplia colección de música en formato digital. Con una sencilla interfaz táctil y una plataforma de software capaz de extender su funcionalidad a gusto del consumidor. Android es la elección ideal, aunque el mismo OS X del iPhone no lo haría nada de mal, pero sólo habría un proveedor y eso no nos gusta. Algo no muy lejano a lo presentado por Volkswagen. Igual que si Sony decidiera usar la excelente interfaz XMB del PlayStation 3 o PSP en un computador de auto.

Evidencias que falta poco

Hace tiempo que existen PCs en formato DIN y Doble DIN para automóviles, pero nunca han sido baratos, ni muy útiles y muchas veces requieren una pantalla externa. Desde el año pasado vemos que en Corea del Sur y Japón venden PCs en formato Doble DIN, con pantalla táctil integrada, corriendo Windows XP o Windows CE por menos de US$1.000. Procesadores x86, 40 GB de disco duro, 512 MB de RAM, pantalla táctil de 6 o 7 pulgadas, GPS, 3G, Bluetooth y conexión USB para conectarle hasta una webcam como retrovisor. Pero XP no fue desarrollado para ser utilizado con un dedo sobre una pantalla pequeña y CE nunca ha sido muy bueno para nada.

Aquí llega Android para salvar el día. A principios de año hemos visto reportes de usuarios compilando y corriendo Android en computadores de similares configuraciones a los PCs Doble DIN. Incluso uno de los principales integradores de sistemas operativos embebidos ha anunciado estar trabajando con grandes fabricantes de la industria automotriz que quieren usar Android en sus autos. El conserje nos dice que BMW podría presentar un auto este año con Android manejando su sistema de comunicación y entretenimiento.

FayerWayer en tu auto.

El Sueño

Como soñar no cuesta nada, vamos a hacer precisamente eso. Las piezas están sobre la mesa y sólo falta que alguien las reúna en un paquete y la ofrezca al público por menos de US$600.

¿Que podríamos esperar? Bueno, ya que preguntas:

Sistema Operativo: Google Android.

Procesador: Intel Atom.

Pantalla: 7 pulgadas sensible al tacto, 800×480 pixeles.

Disco Duro: 60 GB (SSD, ya que estamos soñando).

RAM: 512 MB.

Comunicación: Navegación GPS, celular 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth.

Mucho más: DVD, Lector SD, USB, reproducción de archivos de video, todo el software de Android Market y obviamente todos los servicios web. Algunos incluso podrían interesarse en la sintonización de TV.

Podría ser mucho más, pero yo personalmente encontraría espectacular una oferta como esa.

Obviamente todo con las medidas de seguridad correspondientes. Partiendo de la base que las funciones de mayor distracción, como cualquier reproducción de video, sea únicamente cuando el auto no está en movimiento. Sin hablar de alguna innovación para que no se convierta en el nuevo producto favorito de los amigos de lo ajeno.

No cabe duda que vamos en esta dirección. Ahora solo falta esperar y ver cuanto falta para se haga realidad. Aquí vamos a estar cruzando los dedos y atentos a comunicarles cualquier novedad.

2009 Detroit Autorama: Deucenberg Wins Ridler Award! [Autorama]

Just as we suspected Friday, the 2009 Detroit Autorama Ridler Award was given to the builders and owner of the super-slick maroon hot rod called "Duecenberg."

The Ridler award, given out every year at the Detroit Autorama, is one of custom hot rodding's biggest awards. In addition to the fame and the engraved trophy comes $10,000 cash, a General Motors crate motor and an embroidered jacket you get to show off to all your shop rat buddies.

The rule, other than it being the bestest rod at Autorama is the car must be in it's very first showing anywhere, so if you've got something awesome, you have to sit on it until the Autorama.

The Duecenberg was built by Alan Johnson Johnson's Hot Rod Shop in Gadsden, Alabama and is owned by Doug Cooper of Oyster Bay Cove, New York, who counts nine '32 Fords in his stable. The car is based on a 1932 Ford B400, but let's just say things aren't exactly original. It's got a cloth roof over a lift-off aluminum frame, carefully customized body work all around, some classy Dayton Wheels and believe it or not that's a 405 HP GM LS6 under the hood.

Kia Forte Coupe Caught Testing In South Korea [Spy Photos]

The Kia Forte was just unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show, now we've got spy shots of the Kia Forte Coupe. Based on the profile and the sedan styling, this might actually be a looker.

This heavily disguised Forte Coupe was spotted in a parking lot somewhere in South Korea and if the shape is any indication it might be a pretty nice little ride. Based on the headlights, shape of the nose, and the lower fascia divot revealed when the spy shooter lifted the camo a bit, this car will be getting a lot of elements from the sedan transferred directly. That's not a terrible thing considering for the segment and price point the Forte isn't a bad looking car to begin with. Mated to the 2.4-liter inline-four with 173 HP and the six speed manual out of the Forte SX, this could be a riot of a front-driver.

Used Hybrid Values Fall Off Cliff Called Low Gas Prices [Carpocalypse]

Remember last summer when used hybrids and econo-cars were scalping the used market? Selling for twice blue book and such? Those days are gone. Used hybrid prices have tanked 23.5% since last summer.

The fall from grace on used hybrids isn't all that surprising. Consider at their price peak last summer, fuel was hovering around $4.50 a gallon, the eco-geeks had infiltrated every corner of the infosphere, and Toyota couldn't even make enough new Prii to keep up with demand. Now we're sitting on a market of $2 gas, disintegrating consumer confidence, and a market flush with (used and new) cars making 30 MPG without the price premium commanded by a hybrid. Could it possibly be the forces of supply and demand, and the wisdom of the markets actually works? Say it ain't so, every grandstanding government official who chastised the big two-and-a-half for not building more hybrids! [The USA Today]

A segway between repetitive house music/trip-hop and the common use of samples in popular music, Propellerheads weren't particularly prolific for the Big Beat genre but they did provide a sound more varied than what you get from The Chemical Brothers and The Crystal Method. As a hallmark of how forward-thinking their musical style was, the first Apple iPod TV song was "Take California" from the band. Another good sign they know what they're doing is a collaboration on their only studio album with Jungle Brothers and De La Soul, though it would be to note De La Soul has collaborated with everyone. For a couple of nerds from Bath, they make some good music. The closes thing to a big hit they had in the U.S. was the song "HIstory Repeating" with Shirley Basey, used in a Jaguar commercial. As low gas prices have decreased, so have hybrid car values, but My Beater Mercedes Lacks Reverse thinks history may repeat itself again.

To me, this screams pick up about 15 Metros, CRX-HFs, first-gen Priuls, etc, and sock them away somewhere for the next couple of years.

Humans aren't particularly smart. Oil may not shoot to $150/bbl, but don't be shocked if OPEC runs it to $110, which will miraculously result in $4.50/gallon gasoline.

Given how much there is, and how it's obviously pretty easy to obtain, it should be $20/bbl, which results in plenty of profit and stupid vehicle purchases for everyone.

You, the one commuting in the Excursion/Yukon/gas Ram 2500 Quad-Cab, solo, I'm looking at you, moron.

All of you Escalade drivers, you're just idiotic for paying what you did for a Suburban with a wreath and crest. I hope you can hock those 24" wheels/tires for food in about a year.

The Extremely Limited Edition UK RE5 Watch [Exclusive]

The creators of the limited-edition Metal Gear Solid 4 watch that UK fans went crazy over last year are back, with a Gamestation-exclusive limited-edition Resident Evil 5 timepiece.

The designer of the watch himself, Adi Wells, sends us the scoop on the Resident Evil 5 watch, which will be available for pre-order through UK retailer Gamestation later this week, for a July 31st release. Limited to 555 pieces, this lovely watch comes with a steel band with a dual-clasp buckle engraved with the Capcom logo. It features a reinforced mineral lens, a screw down crown, and many other things that I'm sure only a watch aficionado would understand. Adi was a bit excited when he mailed us, so the description gets a bit technical.

Out of all of that, I think the only thing I understood was RE5 display box, which if anything like the Metal Gear Solid 4 display box is a lovely piece of work in and of itself.

The Resident Evil 5 watch has been fully endorsed by Capcom Europe, and will retail for £119.99. Each watch has its series number inscribed on the underside, and will ship with a certificate of authenticity.

They will be a UK exclusive initially, though Adi indicates that they'll try to offer it to the rest of Europe should supplies hold out. With only 555 hitting market, I'd say now would be a god time to find a friend in the UK. Keep an eye on the Gamestation website over the next few days, cause when pre-orders start, I doubt they'll last long.

Stranglehold Getting Movie Treatment [Hollywood]

Midway's John Woo-backed shooter Stranglehold may be turned into a movie, according to Hollywood Reporter.

The 2007 video game is a sequel to John Woo's 1992 Hong Kong action flick, Hard Boiled. The game stars Chow Yun-Fat, who played inspector Tequla Yuen. The video game was the first project the two had collaborated on since Hard Boiled.

Hopefully this movie adaptation of the game will be the third.

A screenplay for the game-to-movie is being penned by Jeremy Passmore and Andre Fabrizio.

The Conduit's Dropping Of Wii MotionPlus Explained [Wii]

The Conduit's contribution to the Wii library is exciting. It's easy on the eyes, seems like a smart publishing decision by Sega, and planned for Wii Speak and Wii MotionPlus support from the get-go.

For better or worse, Wii MotionPlus support has since been dropped from The Conduit, a seemingly curious decision for a first-person shooter. 1UP decided to find out, straight from High Voltage Software, why the Wii game has shunned the Wii Remote add-on.

"When we actually implemented it for the Conduit, it didn't really add anything for our primarily ranged combat," explains High Voltage VP Eric Nofsinger. "We had hoped that it would allow for better off screen IR tracking, but the device seems to lend itself more naturally for hand to hand combat where the player can calibrate in-between bouts."

That's a little bit distressing to potential Wii MotionPlus owners looking forward to more, not less support for the one-to-one motion tracking peripheral. We know that Nintendo's own Wii Sports Resort relies on it, as does the EA Sports Wii lineup and expect more games to support it once, you know, the thing actually comes out.

With Sega planning to ship The Conduit this June, perhaps those rumors of a delay for the MotionPlus accessory started to give the publisher pause.

Over the weekend I learned that someone I knew from work died as the result of a bicycle accident. James Meadow was a talented, charming writer and a genuinely nice guy. I'd hesitate to call us friends, I didn't know him that well. But I always respected his talent and we would occasionally joke with one another in the office.

I used to deliberately call him MeadowS and he'd call me CreShentay.

His death, so abrupt, is a reminder of how easy it is to take things for granted.

Silent Hill Gets Re-Rated, Wii-make Announcement Coming Soon? [Wii]

If Konami does have plans to re-release the original Silent Hill for the Wii and PSP, as previously rumored, that announcement must be coming soon, as the BBFC has just recently rated the title.

Rating a ten-year-old PlayStation game isn't typically the kind of thing the British Board of Film Classification does these days, so we're guessing that the Wii and PSP remake rumor holds some water. The BBFC "15" rating issued today doesn't spill any details, other than that the game "Contains strong violence." It doesn't list platforms or developer.

It does, however, list a slew of scenes from the game reviewed by the BBFC. These include titles like "BAD ENDING PT.2" and "HARRY, CYBIL, AND DAHLIA" but nothing that jumps out as new or different from the original Silent Hill.

Silent Hill: Origins developer Climax was previously pegged to be handling platform translation duties, bringing the 1999 psychological horror adventure to the Wii and PlayStation Portable.

We wonder if Konami is taking a page from Capcom's playback, readying a series of Wii remakes along the lines of the Resident Evil cash-ins. If they do right by Silent Hill, let's hope so.
